The Lord in Hosea 4:6 says,
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected
knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have
forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” (NKJV)
From my counselling experience over the years, from general observation of happenings in many marriages around me, and from various reports I have read of marital situations far and wide, I have come to realize that at the root of most of the discernible abnormalities and discomfiture in marriages these days is IGNORANCE! Unfortunately, even “God’s people” are not exonerated from this ravaging ignoration!
Some Pharisees once came to Jesus to seek His opinion of their propensity to divorce their wives for just any reason.
“The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful
for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” (Matt. 19:4, NKJV)
Though their object was to trap Jesus, they were actually exposing the true state of their spiritual declension as manifested in their flagrant disregard for the sacred institution of marriage. At that point in the history of “God’s people”, the fabrics of marriage was so weak that it could be shredded by the sword of flimsy, inconsequential excuses! Getting divorce became so cheap, so rampant.
And, what was the Lord’s informed response? “…. Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ … (Matt. 19:4-6)
The emphasis here in this message is that ‘HAVE YOU NOT READ” in the Lord’s answer to these hypocritical Pharisees. By implication, the Lord was charging them of being ignorant of what is written in their Torah [their then Bible]. The Lord was saying, “Have you not read your Holy Book to know what the Maker of marriage says in answer to your question?”. Obviously, their ways maritally speaking was contrary to the stand of He who made them at the beginning. He was therefore referring them to go and gain the knowledge of the truth, and answer by themselves the question they have come to ask Him.
We must not fail to point out the “spiritual status” of these Pharisees among their people then and now. They were and are supposed to be the spiritual guides to the people, being custodians of the Mosaic laws. They were rigid interpreters of the letter of the Mosaic laws, but not infrequently violated the spirit of it by their traditional and philosophical interpretations. It is therefore a terrible height of hypocrisy for them to feign ignorance of what the Law says about marriage.
In the scripture [Hos. 4:6] above, the reason why the people of God were being destroyed was given to be “lack of knowledge”. At this, one might be tempted to conclude that they lacked knowledge because knowledge was lacking! There ignorance would have therefore been attributed to unavailability of relevant information. But, alas, that was far from the case!
Why did they lack knowledge? It is “Because you [they] have rejected knowledge”. In essence, their ignorance was self-imposed! It was their fault that they were ignorant. They were ignorant by choice – for they chose to ignore, reject, neglect and refuse to accept available useful information! That must be a terrible demonstration of man’s atrocious self-will!
But our concern here is not all about this history. It is about the striking relevancy of that same state to our present dispensation! There appears to be so much display of self-willed ignorance of God’s mind on marriage in our days. It’s so saddening, honestly. The height of uncomely and brazen ungodly manifestations in marriages of our days points straight to the fact that most of the people in marriage actually lack the knowledge of God’s precepts in respect of the institution. Of course, this bellies the avalanche of information at every man’s disposal. God’s truth about marriage, especially about acceptable way to marital bliss, has never and will never be hidden from man. Why would He hide it? For whom but man were His truth meant to guide? It would be mischievous for God to be accused of hiding information from man. Everything that man need to know about any aspect of life He had already made known; and He kept shedding more light on our path day in, day out.
However, just as in the days of Hosea and of the Pharisees in the book of St. Matthew, we have been destroying our peace, joy, health, destiny, relationship with God and man, etc. through marital blunder and injuries inflicted by our choosing to REJECT God’s way on marriage handling. Pure and simple! The irony is that there is no way to God’s intended glorious ends in marriage except His way! Once you reject God’s pathway to marital bliss, you are guaranteed to end in marital blitz any other way!
Therefore, my married friend, I encourage you here to have a change of heart towards God’s precepts on marriage. Accepting God’s prescription on any aspect of marriage and family life is the key panacea to marital abnormalness of our days. Even every other source of information must be weighed against the written Word of God, and must be jettisoned where it is incongruent with this divine benchmark.
To begin with, therefore, I recommend that you do your best to seek to obtain information about God’s precepts on every aspect of marriage, and prepare your mind to adjust your attitude and actions accordingly. The best library where you can garner the best and most up-to-date information and infallible truth about marriage is the Bible. This is because the Bible is altogether the written Word of the Maker of man and marriage – God. In addition, I recommend that you spear time and resources to read good books on marriage and on human relationship generally. It will be profitable for you also to avail yourself of every available opportunity to attend marriage-enriching seminars, workshops, etc. You may also need to humble yourself to tap from the divine treasure of knowledge and wisdom on this field of life from proven marriage counselors and mentors. I am of the opinion that the end profit to your life and marriage will more than compensate for whatever the cost outlay on this desirable project.
Ignorant kills; knowledge gives life to he that has it! Give your marriage a new life today!
