HOW HEART-DEEP IS YOUR LOVE?

That love is the greatest platform for growing true and lasting human relationship, especially marriage, cannot be over-emphasized. Nevertheless, that true and unfeigned love is a rare commodity in many homes in our world is incontrovertible. I realize that one of the most abused and hypocritical though common statement between relating partners is “I love you”! This is because, in most cases, such statement goes no deeper than the speaker’s cervix! It is never heart-deep! In fact, as the tongue utters the statement, it’s more likely that the heart is in variance with the context and spirit of the utterance! That’s man’s heart in full flight!! [Jer. 17:9]

Marriage can never be built or sustained by lip-laid love; it takes heart-deep love. Even though an important aspect of manifesting love is in the “saying” of it, any such verbalization of love not flowing from the abundance of the heart will be nothing but superficial and ephemeral. Really, it will be hypocrisy!

Let’s go together into the bible “Book of Marital Love” – the Songs of Solomon.  

“Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.” [SoS. 8:6-7]

The dimension of love we are talking about here is that kind that “seals” its object indelibly in the heart of the giver thereof. The object of the love, for love’s sake, is fastened, shut in and irrevocably reserved in the giver’s heart.

Such love is as “strong as death”. This means that it’s so resolute and forceful. You know, when the train of death comes, no man can stop it. It crushes and overcome everything on its way to hit its target. God’s Word version of the Bible describes it as “love (that) is as overpowering as death”. The jealousy (i.e. passion or fervour) of such love is as strong and unyielding as the grave. It’s an all-swallowing kind of love.

Concerning this kind of love, the Bible says, “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it”. The “many waters” and “the floods” talk about the troubles, trials, challenges, adversities and even adversaries we have to contend with under the sun. Altogether, these should not be strong enough to uproot this kind of deep-hearted love we are talking about here. It’s an unshakable, unshrinkable and unshredable kind of love! It’s powerful enough to swallow up all waters and floods that would otherwise overflow and drown weak and shallow shades of love.

It’s the kind of love that maintains its flavour and fervour even where the beneficiary is undeserving of it. The kind of love that is not fearful to flow even towards an unworthy fellow! That’s the kind of love that God meant when He enjoined us to “love your enemies …” [Matt. 5:44]. It’s also the kind of love He manifests towards unworthy mortals like you and I, even right from when we were His enemies through our sinfulness –  “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” [Rom. 5:8].

And where can we get that kind of love from? Not from the counter; for it is invaluable and priceless! It’s the kind that “cannot be bought, no matter what is offered” [SoS. 8:7, CEV]. That kind of love can only be generated and deeply planted in a man’s or woman’s heart by the Spirit of Love (God; for God is Love – 1Jn. 4:8).  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love …” [Gal. 5:22]. It’s the kind of love of which character is described succinctly in 1Cor. 13:4-8

“Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…” (WEB)

It’s a depth of love that money cannot buy. In actual fact, this kind of love is

not available for sale at any material or monetary price! Any attempt to buy

it with money or material things can only be met with contempt – “If a man

would give all the substance of his house for love, He would utterly be

contemned” (SoS 8:7, ASV). When you receive ‘love’ in reward for

whatever the material price, be assured that you have simply received lust

(a deceptive love) and not the kind of love we are talking about here! You

are already a willing victim of brazen con! The moment that price loses its

value or is no longer forthcoming, the ‘love’ equally automatically

evaporates and turns to loathe!

How wonderful and glorious would that home be where this kind of deep-rooted, heart-deep and Spirit-bequeathed love operates! Imagine a home where this sort of love flows unfeigningly between husband and wife, parents and children and, among siblings! Oh, what a heaven-on-earth such a home will be!!

Would that be a utopian scenario? Not at all. It is a possible reality, if the parties involve will give the Holy Spirit the leeway to effect and perfect such love in their hearts. The Bible says, “… because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us” (Rom. 5:5, RSV). This kind of love is a living stream that flows from the Holy Spirit into the willing and opened hearts of men and women. Of course, when you have the Spirit indwelling you, that love flows enduringly and endlessly.

Is your heart open to Him for that? Tell Him so and invite Him in now. He’s already at the door! [Rev. 3:20]. Ask also that the Spirit of the Lord may give your spouse such heart that’s filled with this kind of unfeigned love today.
