Who doesn’t love beautiful things? I do. We all do. We all appreciate beauty whenever we see it. Beauty is definitely attractive. However, abuse of beauty can be very dangerous and destructive indeed!
I have come about quite a few in marriage relationships whose major point of regret is that they had ever made a mistake of choosing to marry their spouses essentially because of their charm! They later discovered that they had built their marriage on VANITY! Somehow, they are hooked – and that for life! Our gain in their misery is that it offers us vital lessons of life – though, only for the wise!
Beauty is good. Beauty is godly. Indeed, being beautiful is God’s doing. In the very fact, He made all things beautiful! He made all things beautiful FOR HIS OWN GLORY. Some say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. In other words, what we adjudge as beautiful is really a function of how we see it. In essence, what one consider beautiful may be otherwise to another. One man’s meat might be another man’s poison. At the end of the day, everyone has his or her own appeal!
In one of our Seminar meetings with the Singles recently, a brother said that when he first saw his [now] courtship partner [who was also present in that meeting, she looked in his eyes like a mother of two! He said, “I never knew she was this beautiful” [gleefully pointing towards her]! The same woman; different “seeing”!
Are you beautiful? Great! But, the question is how are you “using” your beauty? Are you using it to the glory of God, or are you abusing it in self-glory? I need to let you know here and now that beauty, though a good gift of God, could become a dangerous destroyer! It all depends on you. Let me show you some of the dangers that abuse of beauty can pose to anyone:
Making it your trust
“But you put your faith in the fact that you were beautiful, acting like a loose woman because you were widely talked of, and offering your cheap love to everyone who went by, whoever it might be.” (Ezek. 16:15, BBE).
So many beautiful gals and handsome guys out there trust so much in their “beauty” to get whatsoever they desire! They belief that they could attract “the best suitors” of their desire simply because of their charm! Their strong selling-point is their beauteousness! Their beauty has become their idol!
While most of them are young, they keep playing away their opportunities in wanton pleasure, believing that they still had time; and, after all, they are beautiful and would always attract the right suitor in their own choosing time! How often I’ve come about such beautiful-but-wrong ones filled with self-condemnation & painful regrets!
It could make one proud, arrogant
There are quite a few dangerous things that could lift up a man’s heart in this world, and one of them is beauty! Beauty could make a man or woman to become proud and haughty. And that’s a real danger; because pride always cause downfall! [Prov. 16:18]. That was Satan’s primary waterloo. His heart was lifted up against God because of his beauty! [Ezek. 28:17]. Of course, there is no way a man or woman could trust in his or her beauty without being proud about it. A woman that trusts in her beauty is most likely going to be “haughty”, and “walk with outstretched neck”! [Isa. 3:16]. Many had lost their God-ordained spouses for this course; because they were too self-conceited to condescend to marrying the humble but blessed pie God offered them!
It is deceitful
Once you trust in your beauty, you will not only be high-minded, you would become a victim of deception! You’ll be deceived to presume that you have the whole world under your feet. You’ll be deceived to assume that you’ve gotten all it takes to be a desired spouse. You’ll probably be deceived to believe that you’ve gotten all it takes to be a suitable spouse. All these are dangerous and costly assumption! “Charm is deceitful”, says God’s Word in Prov. 31:30.
It’s a passing thing
One natural feature of beauty is that it is a wasting asset! It is a perishable commodity! You see, beauty is not only wasting, it is a waster! Anyone that trusts in beauty trusts in vanity, and will surely reap vanity! At the prime of their beauty, most have wasted away chances upon chances, only to realize later how fast their charm had waned! They ended up trying to keep ‘looking good’ by gold-plating themselves through wanton adornment! What a self-delusion!
Is beauty your prime criterion for choosing a life partner? Is anyone toasting or wooing you ostensibly because you are beautiful? Then, I tell you, watch! You are in danger! You are in danger of future regrets and pains. You would be building your marital destiny on vanity on that basis.
Like the brother I referred to earlier, with a pure eye, your God-chosen spouse will be nothing short of real beauty in your righteous perception. The truth is, there is none that has not his or her own comeliness. The one you cast off as being not beautiful is actually driving someone else gaga! That’s the irony of beauty! I guess it substantially depends on what’s in your heart – real love or freaky lust!
Appreciate God for your beauty. It’s a gift of God. Use your beauty unto His glory. Don’t waste your future through beauty-motivated choice of marriage partner. Don’t “commercialize” your beauty by offering yourself a cheap love to everyone who went by, whoever it might be! Keep yourself pure. Trust your marital choice and destiny on God only. Only in His splendor is your beauty made perfect [Ezek. 16:14].
